Cozumel vacation photography has a built-in advantage: the island’s west-facing beaches catch direct sunset light over the Caribbean. That means warm, golden photos without chasing the light to some remote spot an hour away. We’ve been photographing couples, families, and proposals on this island for years, and this guide covers what we’ve learned about locations, timing, pricing, and how to get the most out of a session.
Why Cozumel Is One of the Best Places for Vacation Photos
Most Caribbean islands have beautiful beaches. Cozumel has beautiful beaches that face directly west, which means the sun sets over the water instead of behind a hill or a row of hotels. That’s not a small thing when it comes to photography. West-facing light at golden hour wraps around you evenly and softens skin tones. It’s the difference between a photo that looks flat and one that looks warm.
Beyond the light, Cozumel stays relatively uncrowded compared to Cancun or Playa del Carmen. You’re not competing with 200 people for a clean stretch of sand. Even on busy cruise days, the southern beaches like Playa Mia feel quiet once you’re past the beach clubs. The water is genuinely turquoise, not the murky green you sometimes get at mainland beaches after a storm. And because the island is only 30 miles long, nothing is more than a 45-minute drive away.
For cruise passengers, the logistics are even easier. The port is right in downtown San Miguel, and you can reach the best beaches by taxi in 15 to 25 minutes. No ferry rides, no transfers. You step off the ship and you’re on the island. We cover the specifics of planning a session during a port day in our cruise visitor’s guide (coming soon).
Types of Photo Sessions We Offer in Cozumel
Every session we shoot is different. These are the most common ones.
Couples. Anniversaries, honeymoons, engagements, or just a vacation where you want photos that are better than selfies. We guide you through natural movement so nothing feels stiff. Most of our couples have never done a professional session before and say they forgot the camera was there within ten minutes. More on our couples photography page.
Families. Groups of 2 to 23, toddlers to grandparents, including multigenerational reunions where getting everyone in one photo hasn’t happened in years. We plan the group combinations in advance and keep things moving so kids stay engaged and nobody holds a forced smile for an hour. Details on our family photography page.
Proposals. We help plan the location and timing, then capture the surprise. At a public beach, we blend in as tourists with a long lens. At a venue like Chankanaab Park, you book what looks like a planned shoot and the proposal is built into it. Either way, the celebration shoot starts the moment they say yes. Everything about our proposal process is on the proposal photography page.
Anniversaries and milestones. Renewing vows, celebrating a birthday trip, marking a retirement. These sessions follow our couples or family format but with a focus on whatever you’re celebrating.
Maternity. The soft evening light and calm water here work well for maternity portraits. We usually suggest a sunset session so the temperatures are comfortable and the light is at its warmest.
Best Photo Locations in Cozumel
We’ve photographed at every accessible beach and park on the island. Here are the locations we recommend most, and what each one does well. For a deeper breakdown with photos from each spot, see our complete location guide (coming soon).
Playa Mia
Our most-requested location. It’s a free public beach south of the cruise port, ten to fifteen minutes by taxi, west-facing for sunset. The shoreline is wide enough that it doesn’t feel crowded even on busy cruise days. Most of our sunset sessions happen here, and these slots fill up first during high season.
Best for: Couples, families of any size, sunset sessions, cruise visitors.
Chankanaab Park
A national park with tropical gardens, stone replica ruins, a lagoon, and a sheltered beach cove, all within walking distance of each other. Entry is around $30 USD per adult. The variety of backdrops means we can shoot gardens, ruins, and beach in a single session without driving anywhere. It closes at 4:00 PM most days, so plan for morning or midday sessions.
Best for: Sessions that need variety in one location, proposals (easy to blend in as tourists).
Paradise Beach
Paradise Beach is the top pick for families with young kids. The water stays calm and shallow close to shore, so kids can play safely while we shoot, and the palm-lined backdrop gives you the classic Caribbean look without trying too hard. Entry is around $73 USD per adult, which covers full beach club access for the day (food, drinks, loungers, restrooms) so you can stay after the session.
Best for: Family sessions with young children.
Your Resort Beach
If you’re staying at a beachfront resort, we can come to you. No taxi, no transit time, and the session fits around naps, meals, or kid schedules. Most resorts in Cozumel sit on the west coast, so you get the same warm sunset light as the public beaches. The one thing to check first is whether your resort allows outside photographers. Some don’t.
Best for: Resort guests, families with very young children, anyone wanting to minimize logistics.
Punta Sur Eco Beach Park
A sandy beach at the southern tip of the island with a historic lighthouse and quiet stretches that feel a long way from the cruise crowds. Entry is around $30 USD per adult and it’s a 45-minute drive from the cruise port. One thing to know: this side of the island faces the open Caribbean, so sargassum (seaweed) washes up from May through October and ruins the shoreline look. We don’t usually recommend Punta Sur in those months. Outside the sargassum season, morning sessions work well here. The east-facing shore catches early light and you’ll have the place mostly to yourselves.
Best for: Adventurous couples in the dry season, morning sessions, quiet beach setting.
When Is the Best Time for a Photo Session in Cozumel?
Golden Hour and Evening Sessions
The most popular time, and for good reason. The hour before sunset produces the warmest, most flattering light on the west-facing beaches. Skin tones glow. The water shifts from turquoise to gold. We start evening sessions about 60 to 90 minutes before sunset, depending on the time of year.
Sunset times shift throughout the year. In December and January, the sun sets around 5:30 PM. By June, it’s closer to 7:30 PM. We set your start time based on the actual sunset for your travel dates.
Morning Sessions
Morning light in Cozumel is soft and even, without the warmth of golden hour. It works well for Chankanaab Park, which closes by 4 PM anyway, and east-facing spots like Punta Sur outside the sargassum months. Mornings also mean fewer people on the beaches and more comfortable temperatures, especially from May to October when afternoons get hot.
For a more detailed breakdown of how light works at different times of day, read our guide to golden hour vs blue hour photography in Cozumel (coming soon).
Seasonal Considerations
Cozumel’s high season runs from November through April. The weather is drier, the humidity drops, and cruise ship traffic is heavier. Book at least two to four weeks in advance during these months because sunset slots fill quickly.
The rainy season (May through October) brings brief afternoon showers, not all-day storms. Mornings are usually clear, and the rain often creates dramatic skies for sunset sessions. We’ve shot some of our favorite photos right after a rain shower when the sky turns pink and purple. Prices don’t change by season, but you’ll have more flexibility with scheduling.
What to Expect During Your Cozumel Photo Session
This is how a typical session goes.
Before the session. After you book, we send a confirmation with location details, parking or taxi info, and a timeline for the day. We handle the logistics so you just show up.
The first few minutes. We meet you at the location, say hello, and start walking. No standing in one spot and saying “cheese.” We begin with easy, relaxed prompts like walking together, looking at each other, laughing at something real. This warms everyone up and gets you comfortable before we move into more composed portraits.
During the session. We move between 2 to 4 spots within the location, following the light as it shifts. Couples sessions are guided but natural. Family sessions include group shots, subgroups (just the kids, just the grandparents, each sibling pair), and candid moments in between. Proposals have their own flow, which we plan with you in advance.
After the session. Your private online gallery is ready within 3 to 5 days. You get a link to view, download, and share all your edited images at full resolution with full download rights. No watermarks, no limits on printing or sharing.
You can browse our portfolio to see what our photos actually look like, or check our FAQ page if you have more questions.
Is It Worth Hiring a Vacation Photographer?
We get asked this a lot. Short answer: yes, but not for the reasons you’d expect.
The obvious thing is that everyone is actually in the photo, the light is right, and nobody is squinting at a phone screen. But the bigger thing is that you get 35 to 60 edited images that capture how the trip felt, not just where you went. Those are the photos that end up framed on your wall or printed as gifts.
Phone cameras have gotten better. But they still can’t replicate what a professional lens does with natural light at golden hour, or guide you into poses that look natural instead of stiff. And you can’t be in the photo and take the photo at the same time.
The most common thing clients tell us after their session: “I wish we’d done this on every vacation.” A few hours of your trip produces photos you’ll genuinely use and display. Most phone photos from vacations sit in your camera roll and never get printed or shared.
What to Wear for Your Cozumel Photo Session
What you wear makes a real difference in how the photos turn out. A few guidelines.
Stick with light, neutral tones. Whites, creams, soft blues, sage greens, and earth tones all photograph beautifully against sand and turquoise water. They keep the focus on you, not your clothes.
Coordinate, don’t match exactly. Pick 2 to 3 complementary colors and let everyone choose pieces they’re comfortable in. Matching outfits exactly can look dated. Coordinating tones look polished.
Avoid bold patterns and large logos. Busy prints compete with the scenery and draw the eye away from faces. Solid colors or very subtle textures work best.
Think about comfort. You’ll be walking on sand, possibly getting your feet wet, and moving around for an hour. Flowy dresses, linen shirts, and breathable fabrics look great and keep you comfortable in Cozumel’s warmth.
For specific outfit ideas and examples from past sessions, see our detailed post on what to wear for your Cozumel photo session (coming soon).
Cozumel Photo Session Pricing
Professional photo sessions in Cozumel run from about $250 to $500 USD. Price usually mirrors the quality of the photos. The photographer’s experience, editing approach, and time spent in post all show up in the final gallery. The cheapest session rarely produces photos you’ll print years later.
We offer two session options.
Classic Session. 60 minutes of shooting, 35-40 professionally edited images, online gallery within 3-5 days, full download rights. This works well for couples and small families up to about 6 people.
Premium Session. 90 minutes of shooting, 55-60 professionally edited images, online gallery within 3-5 days, full download rights. We recommend this for larger groups, sessions at multiple spots, or anyone who wants more variety and more photos to choose from.
Both include location scouting, natural posing guidance, and professional editing in our warm, bright style. The only difference is time and number of final images.
A small deposit secures your date, paid online when you book. The remainder is collected on the day of your session. Your deposit is fully transferable if you need to reschedule.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cozumel Vacation Photography
How much does a photographer cost in Cozumel?
Professional photo sessions in Cozumel typically range from $250 to $500 USD depending on the photographer, session length, and number of edited images. We offer Classic (60-minute, 35-40 images) and Premium (90-minute, 55-60 images) sessions. Tell us about your trip on our plan your session page and we’ll send you full pricing details.
How long does a photo session last in Cozumel?
Most sessions run 60 to 90 minutes. A 60-minute Classic session gives you plenty of time for one location with a mix of posed portraits and candid moments. A 90-minute Premium session allows for multiple spots, outfit changes, and more group combinations for larger families. Either option includes time for the session to warm up naturally so nothing feels rushed.
Where are the best photo locations in Cozumel?
Playa Palancar is the most popular for its white sand and turquoise water. Chankanaab Park gives you tropical gardens, stone ruins, and beach all in one location. Paradise Beach is ideal for families with young kids because of the calm, shallow water. San Miguel’s waterfront works well for cruise passengers who want to stay close to the terminal. Our full location guide (coming soon) covers each spot in detail.
Is it worth hiring a vacation photographer?
If you want photos where everyone is actually in the frame, the lighting is intentional, and the quality is good enough to print and frame, then yes. Phone cameras are convenient but can’t replicate what a professional lens does with natural Caribbean light. The photos from a session become the ones you actually print and use. Most of our clients tell us these are their favorite photos from the entire trip.
Can I book a photo session from a cruise ship?
Absolutely. We work with cruise passengers regularly and build sessions around your port schedule. Most ships give you roughly 7 AM to 5 PM on the island, which is plenty of time for either a morning or midday session. We recommend meeting within 30 to 60 minutes of docking so you have the full session plus time to get back comfortably. Check out our cruise port day guide (coming soon) for tips on making the most of your time.
